Testing Patterns and Best Practices

Common Test Structure

All provider tests follow a consistent pattern:

  1. Initialization Tests: Stub/real mode, environment variables, HTTP factory
  2. Execute Method Tests: API calls, parameters, JSON mode
  3. Error Handling: HTTP errors, rate limits, malformed responses
  4. Provider-Specific Features: Model variants, special configurations

Mock Patterns

OpenAI-Compatible APIs (DeepSeek, Moonshot):

mock_response.json.return_value = {
    "choices": [{"message": {"content": "response"}}],
    "usage": {"prompt_tokens": 10, "completion_tokens": 20}
}

Anthropic API:

mock_response.json.return_value = {
    "content": [{"type": "text", "text": "response"}],
    "usage": {"input_tokens": 10, "output_tokens": 20}
}

Gemini API:

mock_part.text = "response"
mock_content.parts = [mock_part]
mock_candidate.content = mock_content
mock_response.candidates = [mock_candidate]

Environment Variable Testing

All providers test graceful degradation:

  • @patch.dict(os.environ, {}, clear=True) - No API key → stub mode
  • @patch.dict(os.environ, {"API_KEY": "test-key"}, clear=True) - Real mode

Code Quality Improvements

1. Dependency Fixes

File: src/nexuscore/agents/patch_applier.py

try:
    import patch
    HAS_PATCH = True
except ImportError:
    HAS_PATCH = False

File: src/nexuscore/api/auth.py

try:
    import jwt
    HAS_JWT = True
except Exception as e:
    HAS_JWT = False
    logging.warning(f"PyJWT not available ({type(e).__name__})...")

2. Test Isolation

  • All tests use unittest.mock for dependency isolation
  • No real API calls during testing
  • Consistent stub fallback behavior
